2016 blah blah blah
You know why people complain and whine and commiserate with each other? Because it’s easy, that’s why. It’s easy to focus on all the shitty things that have happened in 2016 because there has been a lot of shitty things happen in 2016 BUT it’s all about perspective.
Yes, there have been a handful of celebrity deaths that seemed to have shook fans to the core, I get it. Prince was a big deal, can’t say I was a fan but I respect the legacy. So his drug overdose was not cool. David Bowie, Alan Thicke, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Alan Rickman, Gene Wilder… the list goes on. Terrible stuff.
Donald Trump for president? Whoda thunk? I’m not American and I don’t discuss/tweet about politics so I’ll just leave that right there.
Not to mention all the local news that just hits you in the feels. Yesterday, I read about the murder/suicide of a dad and his two boys, ages 11 and 13. The mom came to pick them up for the holidays and found them. They lived in my city and the kids were the same age as mine. News like this is painful on a physical level, I actually feel my heart ache and it’s something I can’t read too much about. I didn’t even know this family but as a mother, my heart absolutely breaks for their mother and the family that is left to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives.
I’m just going to stop now.
I did this whole “checklist” thing when I was younger, the kind where you keep track of everything and watch as it builds into some depressing record, cataloging the events of your life. When you do that with the year and compile a list of everything that went wrong or kicked you in the head, you’ll look for more reasons to hate 2016 until you’re drowning in them.
You can’t carry every trauma or you’ll never live your life. It doesn’t make you oblivious or heartless or lack empathy, either. It simply means you know enough to change the world from within and do what you can to make the world a better place.
What’s one positive thing that happened to you this year? New job? New hair style? New relationship? Travel anywhere? Launch anything? Make any memories? Rekindle a friendship? Lose weight? Liberate yourself from a toxic relationship? Get a puppy?
Your life isn’t a country song, it’s a sweet melody of uptown funk that you create. It’s never all bad and 2016 isn’t the end of the world. I’m sure people thought 1939 was a bad year and that it wasn’t going to get any better. It always does and as bad as you think 2016 was, focus on everything that went right for you. That’s a checklist you need to make.
2016 gave us DEADPOOL and Negan!! Come on, that alone is a reason to smile (if you’re a twisted pop culture geek like me, that is. Of course it also gave us that STUPID Walking Dead season finale so…)
You’re here to shine your light, bitches! Do that and illuminate your way into 2017.
It’s gonna be a helluva good year.
